Introduction -

Information technology does not only facilitate information flow, but also plays an important role in the business sector. Online marketing is one of the areas truly embraces the development of information technology. Online marketing is not restricted by the access time like TV ad or printed ad do and it is more measurable, effective. Also they will eliminate the classical model that marketing own today. Interested Internet surfers can access to the marketing material or product information whenever they want. Also, information flow tends to be much faster and with less geographical limit in the Internet world. Unlike traditional mail promotion, marketers do no need to access the important information, like address of target audiences in order to send out their promoting materials. Accessing to the email addresses or phones numbers of target audiences tend to be easier than the access to their addresses. As the popularity of Internet grows, many electronic appliances come with the Internet access function, like mobile phone or PDA. According to the Neilson Online Q1 2008 report, total online ad expenditure in Hong Kong reached HK$172 m in Q1 2008. There are more than 1000 advertisers in Hong Kong engaged in online advertising, which launched almost 2900 advertising campaigns in Q1 2008 , “Hong Kong spending on online ads reaches HK$172MM in the first quarter of 2008” [1].

Widgets, RSS, search engine and social network are the most famous and well-known techniques applying in online marketing nowadays.

Widget -

A widget is a piece of code that users can add to their webpage, personalized homepage, web browser, desktop, blog or social network and provide a useful service to the user. “This is a scheme to open the site to third-party developers use widget.”[2] “It takes on a graphical form and work like a mini application or program.” [3] And the mini-application can provide you with the fast access to information. A specific piece of content present inside the widget instead of a primary web page that can make the user feel more interesting and prompt further exploration, moreover it can lead you to more page views. Widget can introduce your site’s content / functionality to new users who may not have known your site existed. User can interact with rich content within the ads and no need to click through to another site.

Figure 1.1 website of ilike.com

iLike is a social music discovery site that features an iTunes plug in and collect all of your iTunes listening behavior. “iLike provide a widget that displays your most recently listened songs,” [4] who is similar taste with you, which songs are similar as your play list. The widget is also a music player that allows audiences to play samples of the songs and download the songs. “This widget is updated in real time and is a great example of a widget that is powered to promote the further business and personalized data.” [5]
Widgets only spend on minimal cost, and it can push your site to reach out to all corners of the Web. The growing consumer demand for a more personalized web experience and match with the increasing influence with social networking sites in counties. That means “widgets are fast becoming one of the most effective ways for advertisers to communicate with consumers on the internet.” [1]
“Media companies see widgets as an important new method of reaching audiences both inside and outside their domains.”[6]
“It measures effectiveness and lets the publishers understand their audience.”[7]
“Widgets are the way people in the further will consume content and ads on the social web, on their desktops and on the mobile web as well” Peggy Fry from Digital Media-Asia.com said. [1]

RSS -

RSS which stands for Really Simple Syndication, was a technology widely used in blogs and news channel developed by Netscape in 1999. According to Microsoft, “RSS feeds deliver new content to you on the topics in which you are interested.”[8]. It will deliver the content in a simple, easy to understand format, with no fancy background picture, front colour and music to the user. RSS will scan the web-site constantly and alert the user about the update via a feed. An update normally contains a headline with either a few lines or full texts. In both cases, the user will receive alert of new updates only and would not get mix up with old updates with an option to see the full content by click the headline. This will prevent the overloading of the web-browser by background music, and improve the speed of loading. Because of the simple format of RSS, this technology is also used in mobile phone and PDA when every bits of data transfer cost money and fancy background is highly unnecessary.

One of the examples about the uses of RSS other than blogs and news channel would be job seeking web-site.
http://www.jobsdb.com.hk/

Figure 2.1 Homepage of JobsDB

In Figure 2.1, we can see there is a “RSS” function at the right hand side of the web page.

Figure 2.2 Updates of JobsDB

We can found that once we click the “RSS” function, we can choose which field you are interested to ask for an alert once there is any updates see Figure 2.2.

Figure 2.3 RSS Pages of JobsDB

In Figure 2.3, we can then click into the field you interested to have a sight on the most updated items.

Figure 2.4 E-mail from JobsDB to member

Also, you can register as a member of the web and ask for alert for the new updates only via email as the RSS function see Figure 2.4.

In this example, RSS helps the web to send the most updates of the category that the users interested for so it will save time for the users to get the useful information from the web only. By the way, the web host can help both employer (the guy who post the ad) to seek for suitable employee in which the web host can earn money from the fee of advertisement posting.
earch Engine -

Search Engine, there are 2 types of search engines. First one is used within the web-site, and allows the client/ user to search for the product they like inside our catalogues. By tweaking the setting of the search engine, when the client/user do a search about a range of product, we could put the search result in a order we asked, and show up the featured product within the requested product range and promotion the product by putting it in front.
Here is the example of search engine within web-site:
http://www.bloomingdales.com/

Figure 3.1 Homepage of Bloomingdales

See in Figure 3.1, we found www.bloomingdales.com is an online shopping web-site.
We can see there is a table that you can enter the items you are interested to find in the web. Once you enter it, you can then click “GO” to proceed searching.

Figure 3.2 Example of Search

In Figure 3.2, we can see “Tee” is entered as an item that the consumer would like to search for.

Figure 3.3 Search Result

Once searching done, the results come out and consumer can see all the items in this web which is related to “Tee” see Figure 3.3.

The second type is the normal search engine like Google and Yahoo. This kind of search engine will search the whole internet about the inputted data and return the possible result. In the modern days, we could make a deal with the search engine, and they will prioritise the search result which will show your web-site or product in an advertisement box or in front of the others.

Figure 3.4 Homepage of Yahoo

In Figure 3.4, we can see there is a table that you can enter the items you are interested to find in the web. Once you enter it, you can then click “web search” to proceed searching.

Figure 3.5 Search example of Yahoo

For instance, the user would like to search some webs related to “fashion”, then just enter “fashion” plus click “web search” see figure 3.5,

Figure 3.6 Result of the search

Then the user can get the related web-sites there. And we can see that the search results are ranged since the search engine prioritise the search result which will show the web-site or product in an advertisement box or in front of the others that have made a deal with them see figure 3.6.

Figure 3.7 Search Result

Actually, this kind of searching is also used for the search engine within web-site so we can found that the items showed is prioritised in the search result which will show the product in an advertisement box or in front of the others that the appointed brand have made a deal with the web host e.g. http://www.bloomingdales.com/ have made a deal with Missioni to be the 1st priority to show their product which sells in this web see figure 3.7.

Social Network -

Social Network is the relationship between human, groups, organizations, Internet, Information, multimedia process entities. It is a place for socializing but no limitation of space, time and who.
“We define social network sites as web-based services that allow individuals to construct a profile to share connection and also connect to those made by others within a bounded system.”[9] “The social relationships can views in terms of nodes and ties. Nodes are the individual roles in the network and ties are the relationship between the roles.” [10]

People can meet friends, family even strangers. Within the network, users can chat, share photographs, video, organize events, make announcements, and meet new friends around the world. The most common social network sites (SNSs) such as MySpace, Facebook, Youtube, QQ and friendster have attracted millions of users and they have integrated these sites into their daily practices.
“While SNSs are often designed to be widely accessible.” [10] It makes a positive value for online marketing.
Below is the example of how marketer promotes their product with a social network sites.
McDonald’s “shakes it” on Facebook.
McDonald’s sought to generate their product “Sahke Sahke Fries” by launching a contest both on a traditional website and via a Facebook widget.. They executed the campaign with a mini game. Participants could pick a photo of their friend in Facebook and generate on a cartoon bodies and allowed members to “shake” their friends digitally by the mouse. And users can get marks for the “shake” momentum to win a mobile phone. Also the system could record the motion of “shake” and forward to friends. At a result, participants uploaded 281 videos onto the campaign’s website. One facebook, 12,805 users downloaded the application.
